Colorado Travel: My First Trip to CO
Recounting one of the greatest journeys so far in my life
The first time I drove to Colorado, I was 23 years old. From Houston to Colorado Springs is about 14 hours.
I did not break the trip up except for gas. Thinking about it now, I was a mad man lol. And my back still feels the stiffness from sitting in the car for so long.
When I arrived, I cannot truly describe the feeling my body felt. Driving through Texas for 10+ hours is nothing but flat land and some hills. Boring!
Once you get into New Mexico though, the landscape transforms and the drive becomes more fascinating to experience. As the sun was setting, I drove in darkness for the remainder of my trip. There were a few other cars and trucks on the road so it wasn’t just me. But in this land, there were no city lights… it felt more “out there” than I had ever been before.
This trip was about more than just seeing Colorado. It was about becoming wiser, seeing the world, and going beyond my comfort zone.
I arrived at my hotel around midnight and there was snow on the ground. I hadn’t seen snow in YEARS. The last time it snowed in Houston was a one-day event where it all melted the next day. So it was cool to play with the snow for a bit.
Other than that, it was pitch black outside. When I finally sat down for a moment I realized how exhausted I was so I crashed after a hot shower.
When I awoke the next morning, I was in absolute amazement.
What my eyes saw next is a memory I hope I never forget… beautiful mountains, some covered in snow standing tall and proud along the landscape. What a cool experience for a Texan from a flat country, so I thought.
The first time I went to Colorado I did not do much research on the weather but since then things have changed. Apparently, I was visiting at an ideal time when some areas had snow but it wasn’t everywhere. That was a win in my book.
I took photos. Maybe I should have looked at the camera instead of trying to look cool haha!
I drove around Colorado Springs trying different food spots and found some neat things in the city like street art and delicious burritos. Colorado Springs has a special place in my heart. It is really a chill city that you should visit if you get the chance.
Part of the reason why I drove 14 hours is that I wasn’t really comfortable flying at the time. Come to think of it, I spent 2 days of my trip on the road. But it was worth it! And I would do it again but maybe with a little better planning this time and breaking the drive up into smaller chunks.
Since then, I have been to Colorado 2 more times I believe. Maybe 3. It’s cool to say that I am almost losing count.
I took a few other photos, some of which I deleted but I kept these (below).
Mountains are really beautiful and photos cannot speak to how massive they are. The journey to see these beautiful feats of nature had been a success and I am very grateful that I had the chance to experience this beauty.
